Definition of Adjective?
“The adjective is a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun. Adjectives can be used to describe a person, place, or thing in a sentence”. Ex: Joe is a tall man.
There are four types of Adjectives:
- Possessive Adjective
- Interrogative Adjective
- Demonstrative Adjective
- Compound Adjective
The possessive adjective shows ownership. It is formed by adding s to the simple adjective. The possessive pronouns are formed by adding the suffix s to the pronoun. The possessive pronouns are mine, yours, hers, its, ours, yours, theirs.
- The dog is brown.
- The dog’s colour is brown.
- This is my book.
- This book is mine.
Interrogative adjective is used to ask questions. They are used to ask question where you don’t know the answer.”
- Which is the best game?
- Where is my book?
- How much this pen cost?
- When is the next test?
- What grade is this student?
- How many people are there in the class?
- How is your mom?
Demonstrative adjectives are used to point out or to refer to specific persons, places, things, or ideas. In the English language, there are only four demonstrative adjectives, namely “this”, “that”, “these”, and “those”.
- Can I take this bag to put all my books?
- Did you bring this cloth for me?
- This web series we are watching now is really very interesting.
A compound adjective is also written as two or more words connected by a hyphen. In a compound adjective, the parts of the word work together and are similar in meaning, in the same way that the individual words are similar in meaning.
Example: If we want to say ‘a large black bag’, we can say ‘a bag that is large and black’. The order of adjectives is inverted in this case.
Use of adjectives in Sentence
In my opinion, using adjectives in a sentence make it more attractive, meaningful and understandable. Adjectives are very useful in writing. They can be used to describe the person or thing. They add beauty and grace to the writing. In the sentence ‘It was a beautiful day’, the adjective beautiful is used to describe the day. In the sentence ‘He is an intelligent boy’, the adjective intelligent is used to describe the boy. In this way adjectives are used to make the meaning of the sentence more effective and clear.
