“Friction is an external force that opposes motion between two surfaces in contact.”It is necessary for the generation of motion but can also be a hindrance, depending on the type of surfaces in contact.

Types of Friction

There are many types of friction but broadly they are of four types static friction, kinetic friction, viscous friction and rolling friction.

Static Friction

Kinetic Friction

Kinetic friction is the force that resists the motion of two objects that are in contact with each other and is dependent on the objects’ surface materials and the force pressing them together. It plays an important role in many everyday activities and engineering, allowing us to design more efficient machines and equipment.

Viscous Friction

Viscous friction is a form of drag that occurs when two objects move past each other. It is caused by the viscosity of the fluid between the two objects, creating greater friction the more viscous the fluid is. This form of friction, also known as fluid friction, is used in many applications such as brakes, submarines, and pipes.

Rolling Friction

Rolling friction is a force that occurs when an object rolls along a surface, caused by the deformation of the object or surface. It is significantly lower than sliding friction, and is affected by the weight, material and speed of the object. Wheels are used to take advantage of rolling friction in vehicles.
